Alternative Therapy Options

Historically a health insurance policy did not cover alternative therapy options such as acupuncture; however there has been an ever increasing demand that health plan providers allow for acupuncture treatments. Even if your health insurance carrier has not offered coverage in the past, they may have recently changed due to a growing demand for this form of therapy and many insurance companies now offer policies that cover acupuncture and related services performed by an acupuncturist.

Some health plans require that the treatments be provided by a licensed physician, MD or DO and in those states that license acupuncturists, some insurance companies will cover them, but require that the treatment be recommended or referred by a licensed medical physician. Traditional Chinese Medicine is slowly gaining recognition in the U.S. and more insurance companies such as United Healthcare, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, and Cigna cover acupuncture for the treatment of pain. Be sure to call your insurance’s customer service center and ask whether acupuncture is covered under your health plan.
